Does Social Status Matter?

By what standard can we judge how we are doing in life? Most people look around them in hopes that society will provide a gauge. But libertarianism is an individualist view of life. Does our social status matter at all? In Ayn Rand's novel The Fountainhead, the hero Howard Roark seems to say that it doesn't, telling Ellsworth Toohey: “But I don't think of you.” William R Thomas will discuss what that Roarkian attitude means in practice, since in fact we make hundreds of social comparisons each day. We will relate keeping up with the Joneses to what really matters in our lives.
