Atlas Shrugged as a Philosophical Novel part 1: A Philosophical Thriller
Ayn Rand's magnum opus, Atlas Shrugged, is a literary achievement. But it is also a philosophical tour-de-force. In this week-long course, David Kelley and William R Thomas will tour the novel's intellectual landscape, highlighting the key ideas of Objectivism and the distinctive way Ayn Rand integrates her philosophical system with a tight, developing plot. The course will show how the novel clarifies what is really essential in the philosophy of Objectivism. The lectures will also discuss specific philosophical insights embedded in the novel's characters, events, and conflicts, drawing special attention to insights that are not highlighted in standard expositions of the philosophy. The lectures may be enjoyed individually, but they sum up to a course if taken in sequence. No previous familiarity with Ayn Rand's ideas is necessary, but it doesn't hurt to be familiar with Atlas Shrugged.

Atlas Shrugged as a Philosophical Novel part 1:
A Philosophical Thriller

This lecture discusses the meaning of the term "philosophical novel" and explains the essentials of the powerful combination of plot and ideas that make Atlas Shrugged a remarkable achievement. It concludes with an overview of the fundamental ideas of Ayn Rand's philosophy and the overall plot structure of the novel.

Reason: The Conceptual Faculty
This talk explains the fundamental view of Objectivist epistemology: that human consciousness is notable for its capability of forming objective concepts based in the evidence of our senses. Assessible to people at any level of familiarity with philosophy or Ayn Rand's ideas, the talk will explain how it is possible to think in terms of objective abstractions even though all existents are particular and different. This talk provides a ground work in Objectivist concept theory and Ayn Rand's idea of “measurement omission,” and as such is a helpful entree to the definitions workshop planned for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Does Social Status Matter?
By what standard can we judge how we are doing in life? Most people look around them in hopes that society will provide a gauge. But libertarianism is an individualist view of life. Does our social status matter at all? In Ayn Rand's novel The Fountainhead, the hero Howard Roark seems to say that it doesn't, telling Ellsworth Toohey: “But I don't think of you.” William R Thomas will discuss what that Roarkian attitude means in practice, since in fact we make hundreds of social comparisons each day. We will relate keeping up with the Joneses to what really matters in our lives.

Lenore Skenazy - How Did We Get So Afraid for Our Kids?
Parents today are swimming in fear soup. It’s hard not to worry when all we hear about are the dangers posed by bullies, germs, predators, plastic, and the perils of a non-organic grape. Is there any way to regain the confidence our own parents felt—and give that to our kids?

Krav Maga
Krav Maga is Hebrew for "Close Combat" and was developed shortly after the establishment of Israel in the 1940s as the combatives system for the entire Israeli Defensive Forces.  The first "Mixed Martial Art", Krav Maga mixes elements from boxing, judo, jiu jitsu and other traditional arts into a system that gives you a few simple defensive solutions to many different complex problems.  In the sessions at Porcfest we will cover some Krav Maga history, current uses and training procedures and basics.  Then we will get into it, partnering up and learning some techniques.  No prior martial arts experience is necessary - come and learn how to defend yourself so you don't have to ask the state to do it for you.

Atlas Shrugged as a Philosophical Novel part 2: Producers vs. Looters

Atlas Shrugged as a Philosophical Novel part 2:
Producers vs. Looters

The producers in Atlas Shrugged represent the culmination of Ayn Rand's artistic goal to portray the human ideal; and their conflict with looters and parasites is the fullest statement of what she saw as an eternal conflict in human life. This lecture will discuss that conflict as the master theme of the novel, encompassing all the other thematic elements, along with Galt's strike as the master plot.

William Penn Trial Play Workshop by FIJA

Perhaps the most notable trial in the history of jury nullification is that of William Penn and William Mead, Quaker Englishmen who were arrested for publicly preaching the Quaker religion in Gracechurch Street in London in violation of England's Conventicle Act. Rather than deliver Guilty verdicts in response to their fairly obvious violations of the law, their jurors were imprisoned, and had food, water, tobacco, and sanitary facilities withheld from them when they repeatedly refused to convict. An historic transcript of this dramatic case from 1670 survives to this day, and we are adapting it into a theatrical play which will be provided by the Fully Informed Jury Association free of charge to community theaters and schools around the country as an educational outreach program.

Before we do that, though, we need your help! Please join Robert Anthony Peters and Kirsten Tynan for a workshop in which the draft play is read for the first time in public, and provide us with your feedback as to which aspects of it work and which don't, and how to improve it for optimal appeal to general public audiences. As this will take place just days after the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, which Penn passionately cited in protection of his and his jurors' rights, this is also a very fitting way to commemorate eight centuries of jurors' rights! To thank you for your help, we'll be giving away a Liberty Swag Bag to one lucky winner at the end of the session!

Ambicognizance - How Design Thinking Will Bring Down the State
What is the foremost quality of the mind shared by libertarians, Objectivists, and anarchists? If you answered rationality this presentation will challenge your preconceived notions of cognition and hopefully open you to an alternative and woefully absent methodology for disseminating ideas both within and outside the liberty movement.

That methodology is design thinking. Not limited to architects and engineers, design thinking is the only way to achieve bipartisanship in the one place where it really matters -- our minds. Ultimately, it’s the most powerful weapon we have to bring down the State.

Better the MAP than the NAP
Libertarians agree that the "Non-Aggression Principle", or NAP summarizes the essence of their philosophy. However, common statements of the NAP implicitly presuppose the notion of property rights, which makes them sound like a petition of principle to non-libertarians, or worse, like circular argument when property rights are in turn defined in terms of aggression. Furthermore, such naive statements of the NAP offers no guideline for action when the principle is violated. We'll propose instead a more fundamental principle, the Minimization of Aggression Principle, or MAP. The MAP has both narrower premises and wider conclusions, and breaks any circularity between the definitions of aggression and property rights. The MAP is therefore a much stronger argument to use to convince non-libertarians. Furthermore, the MAP does provide a guideline for action when aggression does happen. Some people might argue that the MAP is but a clarification of what the NAP actually means, even though most people who invoke the NAP may fail to properly articulate it.

Cuddle Party
In the name of Liberty, can’t we all just hug it out? At this guided, G-rated cuddle party, we will do just that!

Why cuddle? It's a proven fact that humans need safe, consensual, nonsexual touch in order to thrive. Nurturing touch actually generates a chemical reaction that has significant health benefits for our blood pressure, immune system, nervous system, and overall sense of well-being. And did I mention that it just FEEEELS SOOOOO GOOOOD?!!!!

Never attended an event like this? Here’s what to expect: This is a guided, G-rated event, which means there will be a facilitator to help break the ice and lay out all the guidelines to keep it a fun, safe, and special experience for everyone interested. ALL touch here is consensual and nonsexual and all attendees have the freedom to participate at any level — again, touching is never compulsory. Individuals, groups, and couples all welcome!

Movie - The Cartel
Teachers punished for speaking out. Principals fired for trying to do the right thing. Union leaders defending the indefensible. Bureaucrats blocking new charter schools. These are just some of the people we meet in The Cartel. The film also introduces us to teens who can't read, parents desperate for change, and teachers struggling to launch stable alternative schools for inner city kids who want to learn. We witness the tears of a little girl denied a coveted charter school spot, and we share the triumph of a Camden homeschool's first graduating class.

Together, these people and their stories offer an unforgettable look at how a widespread national crisis manifests itself in the educational failures and frustrations of individual communities. They also underscore what happens when our schools don't do their job. "These are real children whose lives are being destroyed," director Bob Bowdon explains.

The Cartel shows us our educational system like we've never seen it before. Behind every dropout factory, we discover, lurks a powerful, entrenched, and self-serving cartel. But The Cartel doesn't just describe the problem. Balancing local storylines against interviews with education experts such as Clint Bolick (former president of Alliance for School Choice), Gerard Robinson (president of Black Alliance for Educational Options), and Chester Finn (president of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute), The Cartel explores what dedicated parents, committed teachers, clear-eyed officials, and tireless reformers are doing to make our schools better for our kids.

This movie will force the scales to fall from the eyes of policymakers, education officials, reformers, intellectuals, teachers, and taxpayers. Putting a human face on the harm done by the educational cartel, The Cartel takes us beyond the statistics, generalizations, and abstractions that typically frame our debates about education—and draws an unequivocal bottom line: If we care about our children's futures, we must insist upon far-reaching and immediate reform. And we must do it now.

Atlas Shrugged as a Philosophical Novel part 3: Reason vs Anti-Reason

Atlas Shrugged as a Philosophical Novel part 3:
Reason vs Anti-Reason

This lecture addresses the themes of reason and logic as against irrationalism in its various forms, including faith, whim, and emotionalism, as they are developed in Atlas Shrugged. Why do reason and logic matter? Is a rational person without emotion or passion? Apparent contradictions drive the mystery plot of the novel. Unraveling them is the key to solving the mystery and understanding the radically objective world-view of Ayn Rand and the strikers in the novel.

Definitions Workshop 2
(Part two of two) In these two workshops we will practice defining concepts based identifying the essential, shared traits that one group has compared with other, similar groups. In other words, we will be using the methods of the Objectivist epistemology, including identifying the units, the contrast objects, and the Conceptual Common Denominators of concepts. The first session will introduce the method. The second session will review a “homework” assignment the participants have prepared. No previous expertise in epistemology or the ideas of Ayn Rand is acquired. These workshops will challenge you to understand what you mean when you use abstract terms. What you find out may surprise you.

A unique look at activism in Texas from a voluntaryist philosophy following the NAP. Follow the story of a group from inception to present day as they attempt to assert unalienable rights to bear arms and stand against unjust laws in a state desperately clinging to racist 140-year-old Jim Crow laws. Seasteading 2030: The Fluid Mechanics of Voluntary Societies
Seasteaders bring a startup sensibility to the problem of government monopolies that don’t innovate sufficiently. We plan to provide technological platforms for anybody with a better idea to try their micro-nation at sea. Floating startup nations won’t have to work within old broken governments, but will get to start afresh with twenty-first century ideas. Better yet, floating nations won’t lay claim over dissenting populations, but must persuade citizens to move there by providing better services. We believe a fluid market of competing services will unleash innovation in governance.

Doers: Social Media Think Tank
Like all those clever memes and relevant links that pop up on the Free State Project social media accounts? As with most things FSP-related, those are created by a small group of volunteers. To better maximize the reach of our messages, I'd like to begin brainstorming both timely and evergreen social media posts that we can start scheduling immediately to help TRIGGER THE MOVE ASAP! It is my hope that we can become more effective users of our media channels by lining up a decent number of posts in advance, allowing us to better respond to spontaneous opportunities "in-the-moment".

We will be creating images & writing copy for potential social media campaigns, discussing possible posts for the FSP blog and other novel ways to help spread the message of liberty digitally! Let's get those last signers on-board sooner! All skill levels are welcome -- even if you don't know the first thing about social media or image editing... bring your ideas! Plenty of folks who are great at image editing aren't necessarily overflowing with ideas... so let's work together! (And if you're great at both skills, then DEFINITELY join us! Please!)

The Doers Series -- these three events are for people who like getting shit done! My HUGE promise to you: ALL skill sets and skill levels are welcome. I GUARANTEE you've got a strength that we would all benefit from having with us and I will personally help you find it! I only ask that you come prepared to work! Brainstorming and content creation are our goals here. Get a LOT out of a little bit of time kinda thing... ya dig?

Movie: 101 Reasons Liberty Lives in New Hampshire
'101 Reasons: Liberty Lives in New Hampshire' is a documentary adaptation of the Free State Project's list of 101 Reasons to Move to New Hampshire, which was written in 2002 by Michele Dumas. The FSP is an effort to move 20,000 liberty-minded people to a low-populated state with an existing pro-freedom culture. In 2003, participants of the FSP voted the 'Live Free or Die' state, New Hampshire, as its destination. The choice was determined by examining five crucial factors: government, politics, economics, geography and environment, and community and quality of life. For over 13 years, the 101 Reasons list has helped inspire thousands of activists and entrepreneurs to sign up for the FSP and continue New Hampshire's reputation as a beacon for liberty.

Atlas Shrugged as a Philosophical Novel part 4: Happiness as the moral end

Atlas Shrugged as a Philosophical Novel part 4:
Happiness as the moral end

This lecture addresses Ayn Rand's conception of happiness as an end in itself, including differences in her formulations of that end; and the moral right of the individual to live for himself, against the altruistic creed of self-denial and self-sacrifice.

Taking Back Local Politics
Corruption doesn't 'trickle down' from the federal level. It starts at the local level and works its way up. The only way to change it at the federal level is to first change it at the local level. You may think you're only one small voice but there are ways you can make your voice grow and help get rid of corruption in your city or town - school boards, town councils, city planning. It doesn't matter. You can fight multi-million dollar corporations, corrupt politicians and anyone else who needs to be removed from the equation in order to give the people their government back.In this presentation, Kimberly will show you examples of fighting the good fight in New Hampshire and how you can also get it done even if you think you're just one.

AltExpo: Who Controls Your Computer? (And What You Can Do To Reclaim It)
Can you trust your computer? Can you control what it does and doesn’t? Or is someone else in control? How can you even know what it is or isn’t doing? Even if it tells you, how do you know it’s not lying? As computer systems become more complex, how can "Trusted Computing" be achieved, not (just) by big corporations and centralized governments, but rather by individual citizens? I’ll discuss missing bits that could help put individuals back in control: radical auditability; more "reasonable" programming languages; controlled side-effects; capability-based security; provably correct kernels; trusted bootstrap chains; spot checks of hardware along the supply chain; trustless randomization; crypto-feudalism; decentralized network protocols; digital currencies; pervasive sous-veillance; etc. There are plenty of technologies you could be working on that could contribute to making tomorrow a safer place for individual freedom rather than a totalitarian nightmare of centralized control on computing.

Electoral Success For Liberty Candidates: A Proven Model

Campaigns are more than just knocking on doors, telling people about your candidate, and hoping enough people show up on election day to win.

Liberty candidates always face a resource gap due to the nature of money and politics. Learn the framework of the system we use to mitigate that resource gap, and strategies we apply to campaigns in order to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of our resources, and maximize our chances of winning on election day.

Doers: Recording FSP History
An incredible resource was created for us to record the Free State Project's history. It is a "wiki" style site called FreeStateChronicles.org... but without our help and input, it will remain sparse and nearly empty. We need to catalog what we've accomplished and encountered, and this is an excellent, decentralized way to assemble it! Besides not wanting to forget our history, having a written catalog of it gives better transparency and visibility as to what we stand for, and can give potential signers (and in-state neighbors) a clearer view as to what we do and what we've done. We will lay out a basic outline of important events and begin filling out a skeletal framework that we—and other volunteers—can continue to build on over time... but let's get this thing kickstarted into gear NOW! Whether you're a new mover or longtime Porc... we can use your help here!

Get a LOT out of a little bit of time kinda thing... ya dig?

Movie: Deep Web
Deep Web gives the inside story of one of the the most important and riveting digital crime sagas of the century -- the arrest of Ross William Ulbricht, the convicted 30-year-old entrepreneur accused to be 'Dread Pirate Roberts,' creator and operator of online black market Silk Road. The film explores how the brightest minds and thought leaders behind the Deep Web are now caught in the crosshairs of the battle for control of a future inextricably linked to technology, with our digital rights hanging in the balance.

In addition to being the only film with exclusive access to the Ulbricht family, Deep Web features the core architects of the Deep Web; anarchistic cryptographers who developed the Deep Web’s tools for the military in the early 1990s; the dissident journalists and whistleblowers who immediately sought refuge in this seemingly secure environment; and the figures behind the rise of Silk Road, which combined the security of the Deep Web with the anonymity of cryptocurrency.

Atlas Shrugged as a Philosophical Novel part 5: Mind-body unity

Atlas Shrugged as a Philosophical Novel part 5:
Mind body unity

Ayn Rand rejected the dichotomy between mind and body and correlate dichotomies such as theory vs. practice, the moral vs. the practical, reason vs. emotion, and love versus lust. In Atlas Shrugged, she illustrated the unity of mind and body in speeches and thrilling scenes such as the first running of the John Galt Line. Explore how this principle shows up in Rand's treatment of work and love and in her exalted view of technology and industry.

Does a commitment to liberty imply a commitment to anarchy, or the total elimination of government? Is a stable, anarchic system of liberty possible or desirable? David Kelley will moderate a debate on these issues between Stephan Kinsella Center for the Study of Innovative Freedom and William Thomas of The Atlas Society.

The Good, Bad & Ugly Developments in Education Reform
Should learning be done the same way it was 100 years ago? Breathtaking developments around the country suggest otherwise.

And while new, innovative school choice options have some incredible success stories, they could be replicated much faster. Similarly, traditional school district modernization, like expanded online and blended learning curricula, better vocational education, opt-out ability for teacher union dues and tenure reforms have progressed in only a few noteworthy places.

Please join Bob Bowdon, Executive Director of Choice Media, for a presentation on the trends in the most important subject in America: Education.

Choice Media not only publishes the best daily newswire and Twitter feed about education, the least covered subject in the American media, but its content remains 100% free.

Open versus Closed Objectivism part 1
David Kelley founded The Atlas Society (originally: The Institute for Objectivist Studies) to promote the idea of Ayn Rand's philosophy as an open and growing system of ideas. But many admirers of Rand hold to a different view, one promoted by Leonard Peikoff, Rand's heir, which hold that Objectivism is a closed system consisting of all and only Ayn Rand's own philosophical statements. In these two sessions, David Kelley and Atlas Society CEO Aaron Day will discuss the history and meaning of this debate, and argue that a philosophical system can only thrive on the basis of recognizing each individual's need to judge ideas for himself. (This session ends at Noon.)

Stephan Kinsella - Intellectual Property: The Root of All Evil
In this talk, Kinsella explains that the most evil state policies and institutions include war, taxation, state provided education, central banking, the drug war — and intellectual property, or IP, namely patent and copyright law. In the modern age, IP's importance, and the damage it causes, have increased. Patent originated in protectionism and mercantilism, while copyright originated in censorship. In this modern age of high tech, globalization and international trade, the economic cost of patent law and its detrimental effect on innovation has gotten many times worse. Copyright limits the freedom to learn and communicate and threatens to undermine freedom on the Internet, one of the most important tools to fight against the state.

Kinsella, a practicing patent attorney, argues that IP is in a sense the most insidious of the major state institutions. War, taxation, the drug war, and other state laws and institutions are obviously illiberal and rights violations. However, patent and copyright law fly under the banner of intellectual "property" rights, confusing even many anti-state libertarians, who normally support property rights. Kinsella argues that IP rights are based on a fallacious understanding of rights—namely, confusions in Locke's 'labor theory of property'—and that this error pervades and corrupts much modern thinking about the role of law and property rights and the state. The damage caused and the threat posed by IP is greater than most people realize; it is growing; and the intellectual error behind it must be exposed.

Atlas Shrugged as a Philosophical Novel part 6: Trade vs Power

Atlas Shrugged as a Philosophical Novel part 6:
Trade vs. Power

Trade and power are the two fundamental alternatives in human relationships. This lecture explores that alternative as the specifically social-economic dimension of the contrast between producers and looters. This theme is reflected in Atlas Shrugged in the collapse of the economy as power gains the upper hand; and in the producers' and looters' respective goals and attitudes towards others.

PorcOlympics
Welcome to the 7th annual Kids' PorcOlympics. WOW, we have so much fun!! Bradley was a Penn State Decathlete and he uses his knowledge to create decathlon-style "run-jump-throw" events for the kids. Then he does some amazing demonstrations of javelin throws, shot put tosses, etc.! Winners in close age groups get medals and everyone gets prizes and candy. Fitness fun for the kids ages 6-18 and yes, Varrin Swearingen has competed with a few 18 year olds to make them feel more comfortable about competing! And he won races too (all in fun!). Everyone has a good time, rain or shine! Come early (starting at 9:30) and sign up so we can place the kids in age groups and enjoy the festivities! We usually have 20-25 kids attend. It is a great way to meet kids/families/ etc. See you on the Field!

Dismantle, Don't Reform, the Welfare-Warfare State
What is the free society for which libertarians yearn? Is it a warmed-over, reformed, reigned-in version of the serfdom system under which we live? On the contrary, it is a society in which people are free to live their lives anyway they want so long as their conduct is peaceful. That means dismantling, not reforming or reining in, the entire federal welfare-warfare apparatus, including the IRS, DEA, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, subsidies, bailouts, foreign aid, the Pentagon, CIA, NSA, and entire national-security establishment.

Open vs. Closed Objectivism part 2
David Kelley founded The Atlas Society to promote Objectivism as an open system of ideas—defined by its core principles but open to further development, refinement, and revision if needed.
